Does Your Life Feel Like a Vacation?

It’s prime vacation season, and in the realm of popular small talk you’re probably coming across this question almost daily: “So, do you have any plans for a vacation?”

Most of the time, you’ll get a story about a recent trip to the beach or plans to travel before the summer ends. But yesterday, to my surprise and delight, I had two of my clients say to me in completely separate conversations: “My life already feels like a vacation.”

I’ve been thinking about this nonstop since I heard these words, not once but twice yesterday.

What circumstances would need to exist to create a life that feels like a vacation everyday?

I have to admit that I’ve personally felt this way for quite a while, but I didn’t know others did as well. And what do all these lives have in common?

My hypothesis: your life begins to feel like a vacation when you find your point of authentic earning.

The point of authentic earning is at the center of all the coaching and consulting work I do with my private clients, though they don’t often state it directly in their goals when we start working together. Here’s what it sounds like in their words:

“Jeannie, I just want to feel like I’m making a difference.”

“I’ve got this project that I just can’t let go of, even though it doesn’t bring in revenue and distracts me from what I should be doing.”

“I want to earn more money, but I don’t want to have to sell my soul to do it.”

“I’d love to be able to bring all of myself to my work, but the culture doesn’t align with my values.”

“Jeannie, help me figure out how to express myself as an entrepreneur - but still have time for my family.”

When my clients come to me with statements like these, I know what they are looking for. They want to do work that is meaningful and reflects their strengths, perspectives, and passions without having to sacrifice their earning potential or family time.

I get it. This is what I want as well. And it’s what I’ve created in my own life, and what my clients are creating day by day. When these three elements - meaning, money, and self-expression - come together, our daily lives begin to feel more like vacations.

Then, vacations become more about a change of scenery for your life and work, rather than a break from your life and work.

As I write this, I’m sitting on my balcony at the island resort where I planned a last minute “getaway” to the ocean, not from my life. How do I know? Because I’m writing not to meet a deadline, not because I “have” to work today, but because I’ve created a life and business where the work is self-expression. And there’s nothing else I’d rather be doing right now.
