What is instructional design?
Design for the mind — an art that has the power to drive action, inspire ah-ha moments, and result in true learning.
I first fell in love with the field of instructional design during an internship in graduate school. It was 1996, and tech companies everywhere were creating knowledge bases. I was tasked with teaching 200 support analysts how to document their cases in Lotus Notes. By the end of that project, I knew: this field was about more than skills and information - it was about inspiring change.
So much is different now in the world of learning. While instructional designers used to answer this question: “How do we get information to our learners?” The question I’m helping my clients solve now is: “How do I inspire online learners to take action in the midst of digital distraction?”
When you’re ready, I’d love to help you build an engaging course that reflects your brilliance with three simple steps:
Clarify the strategic role of learning in your coaching or consulting business.
Design an elegant and engaging online prototype based on your signature process.
Deliver a digital learning experience that reflects your brand and impresses your clients.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if this service is a good fit for me?
This process is designed for coaches and consultants who:
Successfully teach a live, facilitated version of their program (either in-person or online)
Aspire to license their digital learning experience in a corporate setting
Desire to create an online program that reflects their personality
This sounds great! How do I get started?
Send me an email with some details about your project (including timelines), and I’ll follow up with a link to schedule an introductory call.
I have an idea for a new course! Can I partner with you to create it?
This process is only available for courses that have a stable set of content. So, if you have an idea for a new course, I recommend that you design it and try it out with several different classes before investing in a digital learning experience. If you’d like to learn more about how to create a course, you can read this book or sign up for this group program.
What materials do you need to create the course?
If we decide to move forward, you’ll need to provide the presentations, workbooks, and handouts you currently use in your facilitated sessions. Additionally, our design may include videos of you teaching certain concepts from your program. You’re responsible for capturing the professional recordings and providing edited versions for inclusion in the course.
What learning platform do you use to design courses?
I use a suite of tools from Articulate. These tools support maximum engagement in an online environment and publish to a format required for hosting in a corporate environment. I design courses in this tool so that your digital learning experience is beautiful, highly-engaging, and available for corporate licensing.
How long does the process take?
Depending on review schedules and your availability to collaborate, the course creation process can take anywhere from 6-12 weeks. My process always consists of three phases: define the strategic role of learning in your business, design an online prototype, and deliver an elegant + engaging digital experience.
How much does it cost to build a custom digital learning experience with you?
Investing in a digital learning experience is an important step in your business that allows you to scale in a completely new way. I’m here to guide you through this process with manageable steps (and that includes your investment). There’s no one-size-fits-all pricing since each course is different and completely customized. However, all projects have a set of three milestones that align with your investment.
First, we’ll book a Course Clarity Session to define the strategic role of learning in your business. This includes a projected ROI so that you can consider the short-term and long-term revenue potential of your course. After this session, we’ll decide whether or not to take the next step.
Next, we’ll schedule your custom Course Design. During this week, I’ll create an online prototype of your program. Then, you’ll have a couple of days to gush over the layout and share ideas for activity design. By the end of the week, we’ll have a solid outline for your digital learning experience. From here, you can choose to develop and publish your course.
Then, I’ll develop your online course while you record and edit personalized video content based on our outline. Within 4-6 weeks, I’ll provide you with published digital assets, a preview link for your sales process, and a course playbook with all the implementation details. Reach out to schedule a consultation if you’d like to explore pricing options for your project.
Where will I host my online course?
Many of my clients brand and host their own learning management systems for their courses. I’m happy to provide you with a list of the best tools to get this done. Sometimes, clients provide the published files directly to their corporate clients, while others prefer to host on my learning platform (hosting and implementation fees apply.)
I’ve got more questions, what should I do?
Send me a quick email. I’m happy to answer any and all of your questions!
