Be More Yourself in Your Bio

Most of my clients struggle with writing a bio. It’s easy to understand why this is so hard to do. We are uncomfortable talking about ourselves. We are afraid that it will seem like we’re bragging. And we feel the need to prove ourselves to potential clients.

Most of the time, it’s our heads and egos that get in the way.

Here are three easy questions to ask yourself when you’re writing your bio. They will help you move from your head and into your heart to create a real connection.

  • Ask yourself the question “Who am I?” Then, let yourself brainstorm all the ways that you would describe yourself. For me, I decided on these three to describe what I enjoy doing most for my clients: strategy, direction, and ideas. My readers see this right on my website. What three words describe the work you love to do?

  • The next question to ask yourself is this one: “Why do you do what you do?” Is it because you like helping people? Is it because of your own experience that you want to share? Is it because you’re passionate about your field? Remember, you’re not answering the question “Why am I qualified to do this?” You qualification stems from who you are – end of story.

  • The third question to consider is “What information can I provide to create trust?” For some people, this will be listing off accomplishments and certifications. For other, it will mean sharing a personal story of triumph. For some, this will include the name of your spouse, two kids, or big furry dog.

What else would you like to share with your readers because it’s important to YOU? And, don’t forget, a picture is worth a thousand words, so why not include a head shot?
